ELFA corpus – 30 conference presentations from the Corpus of English as a Lingua Franca in Academic Settings (ELFA). These academic experts consist of 49 presenters (mostly between the ages of 31-50) with 20 different first-language backgrounds (and no native English speakers). As for the disciplinary domains, the ELFA Corpus is composed of social sciences (29% of the recorded data), technology (19%), humanities (17%), natural sciences (13%), medicine (10%), behavioural sciences (7%), and economics and administration (5%).

In addition to the spoken ELFA corpus (1 million words), we recently completed the first written ELF … The University of Helsinki ELFA group warmly welcomes you to the 10th Anniversary Conference of English as a Lingua Franca. After a grand world tour of ELF conferences through Southampton (2009), Vienna (2010), Hong Kong (2011), Istanbul (2012), Rome (2013), Athens (2014), Beijing (2015) and Lleida (2016), ELF10 now returns to its roots in Helsinki where the first ELF conference was held. The WrELFA corpus was financed by the GlobE Helsinki project and the ChangE Helsinki project, both of which have been funded by the Academy of Finland. Special thanks go to research assistants Ruut Kosonen and Jani Ahtiainen, who made a major contribution to the data collection and processing of texts and ensuring the quality of the corpus. ELFA project team members pursue PhD projects in other settings as well: lecturing in English-medium programmes at the Technological University of Helsinki is investigated in Jaana Suviniitty’s doctoral thesis, and Diane Pilkinton-Pihko is developing appropriate ELF-based tests for the same university.

The ELFA team is a part of the Changing English (ChangE) consortium, funded by the Academy of Finland from 2014 to 2017. In collaboration with researchers from the Tampere University and the University of Eastern Finland , we share diverse research perspectives on English in the world today, incorporating World Englishes (WE), second-language acquisition (SLA), and ELF approaches.
